SUMMARY:Kaua'i Pain Conference
DESCRIPTION:The comorbidity\, co-prescribing\, and co-occurrence of disability among persons with chronic pain create greater challenges in managing each condition and reducing impact. Pain cannot be managed in isolation. (Wallace\, 2004) \n\n\n\nThe Kaua’i Pain Conference curriculum addresses biopsychosocial dimensions of pain: \n\n\n\n\nbio – with advances in the basic neuroscience processes of pain\n\n\n\npsychological – how the constellation of cognitive processes interacts with neurological signals to influence health and wellness\n\n\n\nsocial – how societal factors influence patient well-being and clinical practice

SUMMARY:Evaluating and Treating Pain
DESCRIPTION:A significant amount of research has indicated that many\, if not all\, types of pain are undertreated. Some data indicate that only 25% of patients treated for pain receive adequate relief. In addition\, several studies have shown that various pain-relieving techniques may be used inappropriately\, which can result in patient harm. This course provides a comprehensive review and update of the basic science and advances in the field of pain medicine.   \n\n\n\nThe faculty includes specialists in many aspects of pain medicine including anesthesiology\, neurology\, psychiatry and psychology\, internal medicine\, physical medicine and rehabilitation\, orthopedic surgery\, interventional radiology and neurosurgery. Participants learn how to diagnose common pain problems and explore various options for treatment of chronic pain\, acute pain and cancer-related pain. Pharmacologic\, behavioral and interventional treatments of pain will be discussed. Ample time will be spent addressing the role of opioids in the management of pain.  \n\n\n\nCourse Directors\n\n\n\nCarol Warfield\, MDLowenstein Distinguished Professor of Anesthesia \n\n\n\nThomas Simopoulos\, MA\, MDAssociate Professor of Anesthesia; Co-Director\, Spine Center\, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

SUMMARY:Spinal Cord Stimulation: How it Works for Chronic Pain and When to Use it
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about Neuropathic Pain Therapeutics Digital Summit\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Eric Grigsby\, MD\, MBA has devoted his life to advancing the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain. In 1992\, Dr. Eric Grigsby founded the Napa Pain Institute. Over 25 years later\, he has grown a single\, small clinic into Neurovations- a national patient care\, and innovation company that includes medical device and pharmaceutical innovation\, clinical research\, pain and neuroscience education\, and community health through the non-profit Foundation\, HealthRoots.  \n\n\n\nDr. Grigsby attended elementary and secondary school in his hometown of Knoxville\, Tennessee\, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Economics from Brown University in Providence\, Rhode Island. He formed an interest in Pain Management as a career while working at Boston Children’s Hospital in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. \n\n\n\nAfter graduating from Boston University Medical School in 1984\, Dr. Grigsby trained in General Surgery\, Anesthesiology\, and Pain Management at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester\, Minnesota. He was then invited to join the Medical Staff and teach at the Mayo Medical School. He moved to California in 1989 where he established the pain management center at UC Davis and served as Medical Director until 1992. Following his post at UC Davis\, Dr. Grigsby established Napa Pain Institute in Napa\, California. He partnered with wife Dr. Mary Rocca to create Rocca Family Vineyards\, a small family producer of award-winning wines in the Napa Valley. \n\n\n\nMore recently\, Dr. Grigsby completed his Master’s in Business Administration from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and has provided consultation in market analysis\, strategic positioning\, sales\, product development\, and physician training for industry leaders and early-stage companies. Dr. Grigsby speaks nationally on topics including neuromodulation\,  non-operative treatment of spinal disorders\, the safe use of medications for treatment of pain\, and the legal and regulatory issues relating to the proper treatment of patients with chronic illness. \n\n\n\nDr. Grigsby continues to practice as a board-certified Pain Physician and is among the world’s clinical leaders in the field of neuromodulation. As CEO and Founder of Neurovations\, his unwavering mission is to inspire hope and to contribute to the health and well-being of patients and communities through integrated clinical practice\, research\, and education.

SUMMARY:An Intrathecal CRISPR Strategy for Chronic Pain
DESCRIPTION:Complimentary Registration\n\n\n\n\nOVERVIEW \n\n\n\nGenetic studies have identified in humans key targets pivotal to nociceptive processing. In particular\, a hereditary loss-of-function mutation in NaV1.7\, a sodium channel protein associated with signaling in nociceptive sensory afferents\, leads to insensitivity to pain without other neurodevelopmental alterations. \n\n\n\nWe investigated targeted epigenetic repression of NaV1.7 in primary afferents via epigenome engineering approaches based on clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)–dCas9 and zinc finger proteins at the spinal level as a potential treatment for chronic pain. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Eric Grigsby\, MD\, MBA is Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Neurovations.  For over three decades\, Dr. Grigsby has focused his clinical career on academia and private practice. Today\, in addition to busy practices\, surgery centers\, education divisions and labs\, Dr. Grigsby guides research and innovation at Neurovations. \n\n\n\nDr Grigsby has been seminally involved in the majority of the interventional devices and therapies used in the field of pain management. He guides start-ups and industry-leading companies through the innovation\, discovery and clinical research process which includes access to sites for clinical investigation in pain and neurologic disease.  \n\n\n\nThe Neurovations Education division holds world-class programs and ACCME accredited conferences in Pain and Neuroscience.  Additionally\, Neurovations Education helps companies and clinicians develop and learn surgical therapies.  Dr. Grigsby’s non-profit foundation\, HealthRoots\, is committed to community health and innovation for underserved patients and communities. \n\n\n\nOriginally from Knoxville\, Tennessee\, Dr. Grigsby is a graduate of Brown University with an undergraduate degree in Biology and Economics. He completed medical school at Boston University School of Medicine and residency training in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester\, Minnesota. He received his Master’s in Business Administration in Health Sector Management from Duke University. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAna Moreno is the founder and CEO of Navega Therapeutics.
